The velveteen I used for the gamurra sleeves is the last bit of the stuff I dyed with red clay back in 2003. The rest of it got used in [livejournal.com profile] adelavanbrugge's coat of plates. Just in case anyone wanted to know how to get that shade of orange. :)

AHA! It looks like fresco orange because you used iron oxide to get there, just like fresco painters! The velveteen is cotton or is it silk? (pondering dyeing result being lighter than expected, and yes, I think you needed the mordants) The after-mordanting pink hue came from your iron pot, possibly. I also think that having silt in the bottom of the pot has little to do with having too much dye - you'd know that after you wore it on top of a white shift and the dye crocked onto the shift.

Cotton. It smells a bit dusty, I noticed, so there may be some fine clay particles still in there. I wonder if that's contributing to the difficulty getting a needle through it?

HA! That's freakin' sweet. I might have to raid my parent's backyard next time I'm in the ATL. ;)
