Rice Experiment

I got a new type of rice last time I went to the store. I forget exactly what it said on the bag, but it's definitely different from what I'm used to. The grains are long, smooth, and very sticky. I was eating some of it that was left over and thought that it would be good to make sushi out of.

Now, I don't eat sushi much and I've never paid real close attention when my dad was making it, so I had only the vaguest clue of what I was doing. Basically I just wanted to roll some stuff up in some rice. Looking in the fridge, I thought that sliced roast beef and cucumbers would work well:

I didn't put any vinegar or anything in the rice, mainly because I didn't have any. I laid out a layer of rice on some oiled waxed paper:

And then put the other stuff on top:

I didn't take a picture of the rolled up result, because it was a total disaster. Even with the oil the paper still stuck to the rice in places, and nothing held together very well. I cut off a piece and it still tasted fine, so I decided to punt. I cut the misshapen log into four pieces, capped off the cut ends with the last bits of leftover rice, wrapped them in plastic wrap, and made rice balls out of them. I had one this morning and it was quite tasty:

I salted it a little as I ate it. If I were to do this again I would just plan on making onigiri from the start. I still have lots of this rice left, so it's a strong possibility. This rice would make terrible fried rice, so I'll need something to do with extra leftovers.
