SBH Campaign: Orcs vs. Misfits
I've started playing a Song of Blades and Heroes campaign with my daughter (D). The rules are cheap, simple, and allow me to make use of my existing stockpile of miniatures. After a couple of test runs, I got the extended campaign rules (Song of Deeds and Glory) and we started our first proper campaign.
Orcs vs. Misfits
My warband is a pretty basic gang of orcs: An orc warchief, three orc elite archers, a savage orc warrior, and a bugbear elite light infantry. I was just figuring out the benefits of leadership when using troops with relatively low quality scores, so it seemed like a good plan.
D's warband is a hodge podge of misfit humanoids who banded together for mutual protection. They are an elf sneak, a dwarf orcslayer, a lizardman warrior, a gryphon (hawk-man) warrior, and a mermaid shooter, led by a hyena man chieftain.
The two groups began on opposite sides of a river that flowed down from the mountains. Two tributaries met in the foothills, forming a triangle of land in between. Both warbands had heard of a treasure hidden in the land between the rivers, and went there to investigate.
Scenario 1: Treasure Hunt
The first meeting between the opposing sides was quick and bloodless. My bugbear slogged his way into a nearby bog and quickly discovered a chest full of gold. The opposing side saw that they had little chance of recovering it, and the two sides withdrew from the field of battle.
Orcs: 1 Misfits: 0
Scenario 2: Assassination
The strange group followed my orcs back across the river. I hoped that I could slay their leader and take the fight out of them, so I ordered my warband to bring me his head. Unfortunately, after a brief skirmish their dwarven orcslayer brutally slew one of my archers, sending many of my forces fleeing in fear. The remainder of our group retreated in shame.
Orcs: 1 Misfits: 1
Scenario 3: Breakthrough
We hoped to stop the invaders before they penetrated further into our territory. We took up positions in a ruined temple and tried to halt their advance. They boldly made their way into the very teeth of our formation, maintaining ranks and defending their leader from a direct assault. The mermaid scored a lucky shot, felling our bugbear, and the lizardman cut down an archer guarding the warchief. The cursed dwarf, now riding a giant warthog, eviscerated the last of the warchief's guards and yet again sent us running. Though we could have stayed to fight, the odds were now against us and we withdrew, allowing them to continue their incursion unimpeded. I dream of that dwarf's head sitting on a pike.
Orcs: 1 Misfits: 2
And so we leave the story, until the next battle.
